Otherwise during life they are to be prevented from entering the church and when dead are to be denied Christian burial. Furthermore, the Church has decreed that whoever neglects to approach Holy Communion once a year, at Easter, is liable to sentence of excommunication. The Council of Trent has defined that no one conscious of mortal sin and having an opportunity of going to confession, however contrite he may deem himself, is to approach the Holy Eucharist until he has been purified by sacramental confession.
While the above is the general rule, an exception exists once again to pastorally assist the faithful : The Church accepts that the Easter Duty may be fulfilled at another time during the year.
There are five precepts and all of these are presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church whose purpose is to inform and teach Catholics. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church : "The second precept 'You shall confess your sins at least once a year ' ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness.
The third precept ' You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season ' guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. From the above it can be concluded that fulfilling the Easter Duty lays out the bare minimum for participation in the sacramental life of the Church. Although most Catholics receive Holy Communion frequently throughout the year including Eastertime, Easter Duty sets the minimum obligation and expectations for those who do not.
The Precepts of the Catholic Church are a vital part of its long history and traditions, revealing some of the many ways, among others, in which the Catholic faithful contribute to their own spiritual and common good as members of the Catholic Church by building of the Kingdom of God here on earth.
The pandemic has presented obstacles for many of our ordinary practices in the Church. Any questions should be referred to the parish priest. Those for whom it is impossible to fulfill their Easter duty are excused.
