The Rev's death is only just sinking in for me. The song is about someone who has died and gone to hell, where he's being tortured and is in his nightmare and can't escape. He can't turn back, so he has to fight, but loses, and is dragged back down.
The last verse seems to have a very definitive ending, but then the music at the end seems like it will lead right onto another song, so we don't know for sure if it IS the end. I don't think it's about Jimmy dying, because he was the one who wrote it. Also, I don't think they would want to think of Jimmy as the guy in this Ballad.
Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan sisco95 on August 01, Sisco95 is correct. He was on drugs and drinking alcohol constantly. He was the cliche' role of a rockstar. But he was a great drummer at that. One of the best in my eyes. But not only did it reflect on himself. It did reflect on jimmy's death. His death was a nightmare to the band. Yes they found a new drummer but you still can't replace a person you were once close to.
I read several articles about his death and it all said he was a partier and that he died from natural causes--heart attack. That isn't very often because of health it was because of a drug. More than likely cocaine. If you thnk about it sisco is right he saw death coming near. Which is a terrible thought. Anyway, it was about jimmy. You really can't see it as anyone else. HisSweetMistake on October 29, No fuck you HisSweetMistake.
He was NOT some drug addict who overdosed or some shit. He was on prescription medication for a rare condition that meant he had an enlarged heart. He was at a wedding that day and got drunk, got home, and forgot that he'd already taken his meds that day and the overdose combined with being very drunk caused a major heart attack.
Another name for a deadly combo of drugs and alcohol is called a "brompton cocktail", so make of that what you will. Some people say that it was suicide because of this.
I just think it was an accidental thing. Fuckthisguy on May 30, Especially the kinda creepy beginning where it sounds all innocent but dark and then the guitars kick in Awesome song.
Can't wait for the album. It was the first song they wrote. Jimmy loved it, so the band decided to keep it because he liked it so much. Also, the final song "Fiction" was the last track written. This song was on my discover weekly on Spotify- I listened to it all the way through, then looked at the lyrics. It reminded me what would happen if I stayed on that course of life and It scared me, so I tried my best to stop.
I looked at other A7x songs and they were amazing. My entire playlist is full of their music. I wanna thank A7x for helping me- before I listened to them, I was on the brink of suicide. So Nightmare is my go-to song whenever I'm close to doing something terrible. Rip The Rev. The story of a man ending up in hell for all the horrible sins he's committed. He has no respect what so ever for fellow people and probably there lives.
Ending up here is what he deserves as he was warned from a child. God is not on his side anymore because he stayed drenched in sin.
God cannot be around sin. That's why he sent his son jesus christ. I think based off of their drummers death, and the fact that the rev was also writing this song when he died has a big part in the meaning to the song. In my opinion, the song is about drug users and the rev. The whole song is written like it's being sang to someone. And it hurts to know that you belong here" to me seems like he's speaking directly to rev about going to hell for drug use.
And finally, at the end of their music video they show the revs drums set up in a room. This song is so badass. Synyster gates and zacky vengeance's guitar solo rlly makes the song come to life. I haven't heard M. Shadows sing this good since afterlife. The bass is heavy which is thnx to johnny christ.
And the drums completed the whole thing. But I have to say it would b the greatest song evr if the rev wuz the one playing. The music video is addicting lol and I love how at the end they show the drums. The revs drums.
This band is epic and no one can evr replace anything about it. I hope the rev is in a better place. Rip james owen sullivan. A7x forever. With his drum fills and vocals intact, the record shows itself like the band's last record with their drummer.
The same band members revealed some details about the new record in an interview to hardDrive Radio : "[ The eeriest thing about it is there is a song on the album called " Fiction " a nickname Sullivan gave himself which started out with the title " Death ". And it was the last song Sullivan wrote for the album, and when he handed it in, he said, 'That's it, that's the last song for this record'. And then, 3 days later, he died.
The first single, " Nightmare ", was released digitally on May 18, A preview for the song was released on May 6, on Amazon. The band also posted, the same day, a video of the song on their official YouTube channel with animated lyrics, which received over , plays in 24 hours. On June 3, , the band revealed a "Limited Edition" of Nightmare for pre-order available only on their website, which contained: the CD, expanded booklet with exclusive artwork, encased in a synthetic leather case with special silver plated crest, 24'x36' lithograph entitled Death Bat Anatomy with original artwork on special texture paper and instant download of their single, " Nightmare ".
On May 27, , the band revealed the album cover piece by piece like a jigsaw puzzle over a period of eighteen days, revealing the complete cover on June 15, , along with the track listing. On June 29, , the band made available an iTunes pre-order of the album, which contains: a digital copy of the CD, bonus track, exclusive photos, " Nightmare " music video, behind the scenes of "Nightmare" and lyric video, audio interview with Mike Elizondo, type set lyrics with hand written notes by the band for " Lost It All " and album artowrk sketches.
The song " Buried Alive " was posted on the band's Facebook page on July 14, , but experienced loading issues due to a large number of users trying to access the video, and was briefly taken down.
The problem was resolved on July 15, , and was posted on YouTube as a lyric video which also contained a small animation. In September , the band announced plans for a music video for their next single, " Buried Alive ". Mike Portnoy was a huge influence on Jimmy as a kid and as a drummer growing up. So, it was a good fit. So we went to [ Anaheim music product trade show ] NAMM very secretively, had a secret dinner with him, so no one saw us together, 'cause we didn't know how it was going to work out, and Mike came down there and we just talked and we gave him demos.
And he called me the next day, flipping on the demos. He's like, "Dude, this is going to be unbelievable. Maybe he didn't prefer to go out when he did, but he had said some wild shit really alluding to it. He knew that he lived a crazy life. I think all of this shit is part of the guy's master plan and nobody took control from that guy.
Nobody controlled Jimmy. Jimmy controlled himself — or lost control of himself. Either way, it was all ridiculous. Having said that, I think having his idol play in his stead … I mean, hopefully, he's up there seeing Mike Portnoy's approach to his music. I think that would just be an incredible, incredible gift for him. He was very awesome. He basically came up and said, "This is your guys' record. This is Jimmy's record. If there's anything you want me to play, I'll play it. I'm your puppet.
What we were thinking was, That's very cool of him. This is a drummer that we've all grown up listening to and loving.
He's a huge hero in our books. Then he's just like, "Yeah, I'll do whatever you want me to do. It feels like he played on it. Drumming-wise, Jimmy had written all the drum parts.
And Portnoy does a really good job of channeling what Jimmy was doing. Maybe it's 'cause I know the demos and I know that we sat there, 12 hours a song with Portnoy, making sure he played every beat like Jimmy played it. We drove Mike crazy sometimes 'cause we had him doing punk beats, and he'd never played that stuff before.
He always wanted to do it, like, backwards or different and he's just like, "Fucking turning me into an O. So this feels like our last record with Jimmy, even though he didn't have to do any of the hard work in the studio. We exhausted ourselves to just let the world know about how great Jimmy really was and to do it for his honor and his legacy and for our friendship, because he's still a part of everything that we do. We wouldn't want his name on anything if it wasn't a fucking a masterpiece.
It was a part of the story [ of the original concept album ]. The reason I didn't change it is because Jimmy loved them so much and I thought it would be a dishonor to him to scrap all the lyrics. So I left those lyrics, I left the lyrics to "Danger Line. Lyrically, I was working every night, and I wasn't rushing anything 'cause I needed to sink into my depression to write.
It sucked, but, like, I couldn't really drink. I'd just drink a glass of wine, just kind of sit in a room and look at pictures of Jimmy. And I'd write and it's the only thing I could do. So yeah, it was just a bizarre process, a lot of anxiety, a lot of crazy feelings, and then, like, it's hard for me to even show people the record. Not that I don't think they should hear it, it's just that, I listen to it and I'm not excited about it, you know what I mean? It's like … I was excited about [ the song ] "Nightmare" 'cause it had nothing to do with the guy and he loved it.
And there's a couple of other songs that I can listen to, but a lot of it, like, the end of the record is very on him and, like, stuff he wrote. Like that song "Death," [ which appears on the album as "Fiction" ] that's a hard song to listen to.
He wrote one of the most haunting songs, unlike anything I've ever heard, that goes into the saddest, most foreboding ending in probably the history of music.
I've never known someone to write something like that and leave the world two days later. It was a final song that we didn't complete. I brought up doing something like that and I laid down the piano parts and Jimmy sang the song. It was just a really different piece of music and it's always been one of my favorites from the Pinkly Smooth stuff and I just thought it was a brilliant song.
Matt came a couple of weeks later and said, "Dude, this is gonna be an amazing, amazing song. I love this song. When Jimmy came in, came up with the ending, and laid that down, it was like, Whoa, this is pretty heavy. Got some deep fucking lyrics here. It was sort of one of the last things we laid down, too.
It didn't really strike me that it was odd. It was just like, You crazy bastard, you were always thinking about death. He'd written some other scratched lyrics — he didn't write these out, he would just come and improvise them — but he came with another one that actually didn't make the record.
He was always thinking about mortality and all other kinds of shit. Even though the lyric was a little morbid, I didn't think too much about it. Then when we listened to it after he died — we didn't listen to shit for two weeks — it was pretty fucking chilling. It really blew my mind. Towards the end of "Fiction," Jimmy was kind of nursing an incredible hangover. Half the times he'd be up screaming all night, because it's all that guy ever did. It was the funniest shit you ever heard.
Everybody fucking loved it.
